In an exclusive interview with countrymusic.co.uk, rising star Kezia Gill opens up about her musical journey, the inspiration behind her hit song “Whiskey Drinkin’ Woman,” her excitement about performing in the main arena at this year’s C2C Festival, and what fans can look forward to in the future. With a unique blend of Irish folk and country influences, Gill has quickly become a name to watch in the UK country music scene. Join us as we delve into the story of this talented artist and her exciting plans ahead.
From her earliest days, Kezia Gill was surrounded by music. Growing up in a house filled with guitars and the sounds of legendary country artists like Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash, it was no surprise that she developed a deep love for the genre. “Music was all around me growing up. There were guitars everywhere, so I picked one up from a very young age,” she recalls.
Despite excelling in school and earning top marks, Kezia never wavered in her desire to pursue a career in music. She remembers the disbelief of her teachers: “I did well and left with A stars, and when I told them that I wanted to be a country star they hung their heads! Not a lawyer, not a doctor – a country music star!”
Kezia’s unique sound is a blend of Irish, blues, and country influences, reflecting her diverse musical inspirations. “For me, music is so fluid. It can be down to my mood on the day. So many genres have inspired me. A band like Queen could write ‘Love Of My Life’, a beautiful acoustic ballad, and also ‘We Will Rock You’, a stadium anthem. They both work,” she explains, “I can do a song like “I’m Here”, a beautiful heartfelt acoustic song about mental health, and then I can sing “Whiskey Drinking Woman” which is a big footstomping anthem. Let’s break down the barriers and throw away the rule book!”
One of her career milestones was the success of “Whiskey Drinking Woman.” “It was the first song I’ve had playlisted on national radio – it was played to 8 million people on Radio 2 for three weeks. It started as a bit of joke, I know it’s a bit of a cliché in country music, but I do drink whiskey!” Kezia says with a laugh.
Kezia has performed at numerous memorable events, but one standout experience was opening for The Shires at the iconic London Palladium in 2022. “It’s a bucket list venue with so many iconic artists having performed there. To sing 30 minutes of original material was mind-blowing,” she reminisces. Another highlight was her full band show at the Indigo Stage at the C2C Festival: “We packed the place out and it was a rocking show, really memorable.”

She reflects on the evolution of country music in the UK with excitement: “I think it’s amazing how much country music is evolving. It can only mean great things for original artists like myself, but also for artists who just love country. Everyone’s benefiting from this growth in country music. Long may it continue!”
When it comes to songwriting, Kezia reveals that inspiration can strike at any moment. “I’m not your stereotypical ‘sit down to write a song’ kind of artist. That doesn’t work for me. Songs creep up on me instead. They can take me by surprise, like in the middle of the night or I could be having dinner with friends and suddenly I’m ‘I’ve got to write this down…’.” she says, “But you never know when lightening will strike. That’s where co-writing is brilliant. I can go in with an idea and say “I’m a bit stuck here, what do you think..”, and a fresh pair of eyes, a fresh pair of ears can really make it evolve. I’ve written with Alyssa Bonagura, Jade Helliwell, Ben from The Shires, and every time I’ve come out with a song I could never have written on my own.”
Kezia’s live shows are known for their high energy and infectious enthusiasm. “A live show is the culmination of everything I’ve worked for. It’s like the fuse was lit, it’s gone up the road and then ‘bang’, I’m on stage and that’s when I’m at my true happy moment,” she explains.
Looking ahead to her performance at the C2C Festival in March, Kezia is determined to do the UK proud. “Some people might think those stages are just for American artists but I’ve always been an advocate of British country music. I want to make the country proud and I hope I do make country music proud,” she says. As for her setlist, she admits: “I’ve got about 16 songs in my mind but you only have three! The slot is 10 minutes so answers on a postcard, please!” Kezia fondly recalls her first C2C experience in 2018, where she was inspired by the young and enthusiastic audience. “It gave me a kick up the backside to start getting my own music out there. I realised there’s an audience there for new, fresher music.”
As for what fans can expect in 2025, Kezia teases that this year will be a big one. “2025 is going to be a massive year. I can tell you there will be a new album this year. It was recorded in Nashville, my first record cut in Nashville. It’s all coming very soon but that’s all I can reveal right now! Watch this space!”
Finally, in a lighthearted moment, Kezia jokes that if she weren’t a musician, she might have pursued a career as a cleaner. “I love seeing something going from a bit shabby, a bit grubby to sparkling! If I wasn’t a musician I’d have a cleaning company!” she laughs. And when she’s cleaning, she enjoys listening to a mix of country, pop, and classic tunes, with a particular fondness for The King. “I’m a huge Elvis Presley fan so sometimes I’ll just put on the old Elvis records and croon away!” she adds.
She remains deeply committed to her craft and her fans, always striving to push the boundaries of her music while staying true to her roots.
As she prepares to take the stage at the C2C Festival and release her highly-anticipated album, Kezia’s excitement and determination are palpable. She is ready to break down barriers, advocate for British country music, and prove that UK artists have a significant place in the genre. Her journey is far from over, and with each new achievement, Kezia Gill continues to inspire and connect with her audience, leaving an indelible mark on the world of country music.
