American Aquarium
Alt-Country Band
Formed in 2006 in Raleigh, North Carolina, American Aquarium is the brainchild of singer-songwriter BJ Barham, whose raw, confessional songwriting has become the band’s signature. Named after a lyric in a Wilco song, the group quickly carved out a niche in the alt-country and Americana scenes with their blend of gritty Southern rock and emotionally charged storytelling. Their early albums, including Antique Hearts and The Bible and the Bottle, laid the groundwork for a relentless touring ethic and a fiercely loyal fanbase.
The band’s breakthrough came with 2012’s Burn. Flicker. Die., produced by Jason Isbell. Originally intended as a swan song, the album’s critical acclaim and fan response gave the band a second wind. Since then, American Aquarium has continued to evolve through lineup changes and sonic shifts, releasing a string of acclaimed records like Wolves, Lamentations, and Chicamacomico. Each album showcases Barham’s unflinching honesty, tackling themes from addiction and heartbreak to political disillusionment and personal growth.
Their latest release, The Fear of Standing Still, produced by Shooter Jennings, captures the band at its most anthemic and introspective. With Barham’s songwriting sharpened by sobriety and fatherhood, and the band’s sound honed by years on the road, American Aquarium continues to deliver music that’s both deeply personal and universally resonant. Whether playing dive bars or festival stages, they remain a powerful voice in modern Americana—unapologetically Southern, fiercely independent, and always evolving.
