J.P. Harris, born Joshua Pless Harris on February 13, 1983, in Montgomery, Alabama, is an American country singer, songwriter, guitarist, and clawhammer banjoist based in Nashville, Tennessee. His music is deeply rooted in honky-tonk, outlaw country, and traditional country sounds, drawing inspiration from his early life experiences and the country legends he grew up listening to.
Harris spent his early years between Montgomery and Dadeville, Alabama, before moving to various remote locations across the United States. He lived in cabins without electricity or running water for nearly 13 years, working as a sheet metal scrapper, orchard worker, farmer laborer, luthier, heavy equipment operator, logger, and historic restoration carpenter. His diverse background and rugged lifestyle have greatly influenced his authentic and gritty musical style.
Throughout his career, J.P. Harris has performed at major folk and roots festivals, including the Newport Folk Festival and the Lowell Folk Festival.
