Richie Owens is a fifth‑generation Appalachian musician whose life and work are rooted in the deep musical soil of East Tennessee and the Smoky Mountains. Born into a lineage of storytellers, song carriers, and multi‑instrumentalists, he grew up surrounded by old‑time gospel, early country, folk ballads, mountain blues, and the working‑class tales that shaped American roots music. Richie didn’t arrive in Nashville chasing a dream — he was raised inside the tradition itself, inheriting the same cultural bloodlines that produced Dolly Parton and generations of Appalachian songkeepers.
Across a career that has taken him around the world, Richie has toured internationally as a member of Dolly Parton’s band, produced and recorded with iconic artists, and worked across music, film, and storytelling. Yet his current focus is something more intimate and historically grounded: carrying the story of Appalachia forward. His acoustic trio — featuring lifelong friends and fellow roots musicians Bob Ocker and Joe Sharp — offers a stripped‑back but richly textured performance built on guitar, mandolin, upright bass, harmonica, harmony vocals, and spoken‑word storytelling. Together, they create a living, breathing expression of mountain heritage rather than a nostalgic recreation of it.
Their work centres on Richie’s larger creative project, Appalachia — Ballads, Bloodlines, and the Long Journey Home, along with the companion film and music project Smoky Mountain DNA: Family, Faith, and Fables.
