S.G. Goodman, born in Hickman, Kentucky, is an American singer-songwriter known for her unique blend of Americana, folk, country, and rock music. Growing up in a Southern Baptist family, she began her musical journey singing in church. Her father was a farmer, and she started playing rhythm guitar at the age of 15. Goodman moved to Murray, Kentucky, in 2007 to attend Murray State University, where she studied philosophy. Before embarking on her solo career, she fronted the band The Savage Radley, releasing one album, Kudzu, in 2017.
Goodman's debut solo album, Old Time Feeling, was released in 2020 and co-produced by Jim James of My Morning Jacket. The album received critical acclaim for its raw and honest portrayal of life in the rural South, touching on themes of social justice and personal struggle. Her second album, Teeth Marks, released in 2022, continued to showcase her storytelling prowess, with songs addressing issues like the opioid crisis. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Goodman has made a significant impact on the music scene, performing at notable events like the Newport Folk Festival.
In addition to her musical achievements, Goodman is also known for her advocacy and activism. She uses her platform to highlight social and political issues, particularly those affecting rural communities. As an openly gay artist, she brings a unique perspective to her music, often addressing themes of identity and belonging. Goodman continues to live in Murray, Kentucky, where she remains deeply connected to her roots while pushing the boundaries of Americana music.
