The Long Ryders are an American alternative country band formed in Los Angeles in 1981. They are often credited as pioneers of the alt-country movement, blending elements of punk rock, country, and folk to create a distinctive sound. Their music is characterised by jangly guitars, harmonies reminiscent of The Byrds, and a rhythmic drive that echoes the energy of early rock 'n' roll.
The band’s debut album, 'Native Sons', released in 1984, fused 1960s-style garage rock and folk with country rock. Rolling Stone’s David Fricke described it as an album 'where Nashville, '77 London and the mid-60s Sunset Strip converge in songs of pioneer aspiration and outlaw bonding'. This release established them as key figures in the Paisley Underground scene, alongside contemporaries like The Dream Syndicate and Rain Parade.
After a hiatus, The Long Ryders reunited in 2016 and have since released several albums, including 'Psychedelic Country Soul' in 2019 and 'September November' in 2023. Their latest album, 'High Noon Hymns', was released on March 13, 2026. Produced by Ed Stasium, known for his work with The Ramones, the album features guest appearances by Murry Hammond of The Old 97s and DJ Bonebrake of X. The band continues to tour, bringing their energetic live performances to audiences worldwide.
