The Often Herd
Bluegrass Band
While they may be rooted in bluegrass and resemble an American string band, The Often Herd’s transatlantic sound is deeply coloured by their surroundings of Northern England. They’ve made a name for themselves to quote Maverick Magazine, with “a winning combination of virtuosity, enthusiasm, willingness to push boundaries and above all great songs and playing.” They were also voted Best European Bluegrass Band at the prestigious La Roche Bluegrass Festival.
Rupert Hughes (guitar) and Evan Davies (mandolin), write songs steeped in personal experience, whilst drawing from a wide pool of influences ranging from old-time mountain music and traditional Northumbrian tunes to folk-rock, retro-pop and psychedelia. American-born fiddler Niles Krieger and jazz bassist Sam Quintana add fiery instrumental skills to the mix, adding depth and intensity to the arrangements.
