The Americana Music Association UK (AMA-UK) has announced plans for a major relaunch in January 2027, with Steve Earle, Frazey Ford, Kezia Gill, Elles Bailey and Jonny Morgan joining forces for a special concert at London’s KOKO. The event marks a new chapter for the organisation as it rebuilds its membership programme and prepares for the return of its full annual Americana celebration in 2028.

After months of uncertainty surrounding the future of its annual January gathering, the Americana Music Association UK has confirmed that it will return on Wednesday 20 January 2027, although in a different format from previous years.

Traditionally, the organisation’s January programme has brought together artists, industry professionals and fans for the UK Americana Awards, a music industry conference and a showcase festival featuring performances across multiple London venues. These events have played an important role in championing Americana music in Britain, providing a platform for established performers and emerging talent while strengthening connections within the industry.

The association, which has more than 500 members, is entering a new chapter under a new leadership team following a hiatus in 2025 and a period of restructuring in 2026. Its ambitions now extend beyond the annual January gathering, with plans to expand membership and strengthen its presence across all regions of the UK.

For 2027, however, the association has opted for a more focused, single-day programme centred on rebuilding the organisation, reconnecting with its community and establishing a sustainable foundation for the future.

In its announcement on 3 November, AMA-UK explained that the decision followed extensive discussions with industry partners and careful consideration of what could realistically be delivered.

“After plenty of scoping, forecasting and many months of discussions with different industry partners, with our priority being to restore solid foundations and build a sustainable association, we have taken the decision to hold an alternative event this year.”

The association has also confirmed that preparations are already underway for a return to a full-scale event in January 2028, alongside plans to introduce an expanded year-round membership programme during 2027.

Steve Earle Leads Special Americana Concert at KOKO

The centrepiece of the relaunch will be A Special Evening of Music in Support of the AMA-UK, bringing together an impressive line-up of international and British performers at KOKO.

American singer-songwriter Steve Earle heads the bill. One of the most influential figures in contemporary Americana, Earle has spent four decades bridging country, folk and rock, with landmark recordings including Guitar Town, Copperhead Road and The Revolution Starts…Now. His involvement gives the relaunch a particularly strong connection to the musical traditions that the association exists to celebrate.

Joining him is Canadian singer-songwriter Frazey Ford, whose distinctive blend of folk, soul and Americana has earned her an international following. Formerly a member of The Be Good Tanyas, Ford has developed a successful solo career characterised by expressive vocals and deeply personal songwriting.

The concert will also provide a prominent platform for three British performers who reflect the diversity and growing strength of the UK’s roots music scene.

Kezia Gill has become one of the country’s most recognisable independent country artists, building a loyal following through her powerful vocals, energetic live performances and songwriting that moves confidently between country, blues and rock.

Elles Bailey, meanwhile, has established herself as a leading voice in British blues, roots and Americana. Her distinctive smoky vocals and soulful songwriting have brought her considerable recognition, making her a natural addition to a concert celebrating the breadth of the genre.

Completing the line-up is Jonny Morgan & The Moral Support, whose folk-influenced Americana songwriting represents another side of Britain’s thriving independent roots music community.

Together, the five performers offer a line-up that connects Americana’s international heritage with the distinctive voices emerging from the British scene.

A New Beginning for the UK Americana Community

Beyond the concert, the January gathering will provide an opportunity for AMA-UK to reconnect with its members and outline its ambitions for the coming years.

The association is moving its activities to Camden, a part of London with a rich musical history and strong connections to the contemporary music industry. Organisers believe the location will make the event more accessible while helping to develop new partnerships and reach audiences who may be discovering Americana for the first time.

A free daytime event will welcome current members, former members and anyone interested in joining the association. Expected to begin around midday, the gathering will introduce plans for new membership benefits, regional activities, industry partnerships and opportunities for artists to become more involved.

A separate pre-show reception is also being planned for artist and industry members attending the evening concert. Places will be limited, with further information about the venue and timings to follow.

The organisation has asked prospective attendees to register their interest by 30 November 2026, ahead of further announcements about both gatherings.

UK Americana Awards Set to Return in 2028

Perhaps the most significant aspect of the announcement is the confirmation that AMA-UK intends to restore its traditional January programme in 2028.

The absence of the usual awards ceremony, conference and showcase festival in 2027 will undoubtedly be disappointing for some artists and fans. However, the decision reflects the association’s determination to establish a more secure footing rather than attempt to deliver a programme that may be difficult to sustain.

The UK Americana Awards have traditionally offered valuable recognition to artists working across country, folk, blues and roots music, while the accompanying showcases have helped introduce audiences and music industry professionals to performers at different stages of their careers.

For British country artists in particular, the association has provided an important connection to the wider Americana community, where musical boundaries are often less rigid and opportunities for collaboration extend beyond any single genre.

The proposed year-round programme could therefore prove just as important as the return of the annual awards, particularly if it delivers greater opportunities for independent musicians outside London.

Although details are still being finalised, AMA-UK has indicated that regional events, artist development opportunities and new partnerships will form part of its renewed membership offering.

The association is also working on a new membership platform, with existing members being transferred to the updated system before applications reopen.

Tickets for the KOKO Relaunch Concert

With a strong concert line-up, renewed ambitions for its members and plans to restore its annual celebration in 2028, the January relaunch represents an important moment for an organisation that has helped bring British Americana into the spotlight.

For the UK’s country and roots music community, it is a welcome sign that the association is looking towards the future, with an opportunity to rebuild the connections and support networks that have made its annual gatherings so valuable.
